Wayne T. Freer of Floyd Ackert Road, Esopus, NY passed away on January 22, 2025, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, at Vassar Brothers Hospital surrounded by those he loved most.

Born in Kingston, New York to the late James T. and Mary (Simpson) Freer. Wayne was a devoted husband, father, brother and a pillar of his community.

Wayne had an extensive career in law enforcement that spanned 50 years which was comprised of time with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and the Kingston Police Department. Following his retirement from the Kingston Police Department, Wayne went on to spend 12 years as the Director of Public Safety at SUNY Ulster. Wayne also served as a Town Councilman for the Town of Esopus for 16 years.

Wayne’s true passion was found in his experience in the fire service. Wayne was a member of the Esopus Fire Department for 55 years, serving as a former Chief, Safety Office, and most recently Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners. Wayne was also a life member of Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad. Wayne served as the Director of the Ulster County Arson Task Force. He was most known for his role as Ulster County Deputy Fire Coordinator, 56-3. Wayne had a positive impact on multiple generations of first responders. His life is defined by his service to the community.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Jane Freer (Soderback), his children, William Freer (Jennifer), Victoria Marchello (Phil), Katelyn White, and Matthew White, as well as his brother Robert Freer (Blake) and his uncle, Doyle Barger. He is also survived by his grandchildren, James and Noah Freer.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Mount Academy Chapel, 1001 Broadway, Esopus, New York from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Dr. David M. Brechter, will immediately follow. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
