A Kingston man who savagely beat his partner in front of their children was convicted on multiple counts following a jury trial in Ulster County Court this week. Carlos Caal-Chub, 30, was convicted on felony counts of second-degree assault and first-degree stalking, as well as misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child. The jury acquitted Caal-Chub on a single misdemeanor count of menacing.

The case stems from an incident that occurred at a barbecue at 7 Elmendorf St. back on April 20, 2024. Authorities say a dispute broke out between a different couple at the cookout when the mother of Caal-Chub’s three daughters tried to intervene in the fight. Caal-Chub punched her in the head twice and then grabbed the victim’s phone as she tried to call police.

The victim left the barbecue with the couple’s three children and returned to the home she shared with Caal-Chub on Robert Street in the Town of Ulster. As the victim began packing to leave the home, Caal-Chub showed up at the door and began repeatedly ringing the doorbell. Caal-Chub then forced his way into the home by breaking through a basement door with a hammer. Once inside, Caal-Chub punched the victim repeatedly over an extended period of time, knocking her unconscious while she held their infant daughter in her arms. Caal-Chub also shoved the couple’s two oldest children during the attack. After the attack, the victim fled the home with her children and sought assistance from staff at the nearby Bowery Dugout on Ulster Avenue. Caal-Chub was located and taken into custody a short time later.

The trial before County Court Judge Bryan Rounds began on March 31 and wrapped up on April 9. Jurors began deliberations in the late morning before returning a verdict at 3 p.m. Senior Felony ADA Luba Reznikova, who also heads up the DA’s Office’s Intimate Partner Violence Initiative, prosecuted this case, with ADA Anna Thompson as co-counsel. Caal-Chub was represented in the trial by Kingston attorney William Pretsch. Sentencing is scheduled for June 17 at 10 a.m. in Ulster County Court.
