Monica Ayers, 38, is director of intake and marketing for Uptown Kingston-based workers’ rights law firm Getman, Sweeney & Dunn. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Kingston Wire: How did you or your family come to Kingston?

MA: I’m originally from Delmar. I went to SUNY New Paltz, met my now-husband, moved to Rosendale and then Kingston. I’ve been in Kingston for almost 15 years now. We knew this was where we wanted to settle to have a family because of the diversity and all the offerings in Kingston. There’s a lot more going on here. My husband’s mom had a house here and that’s how we started here and we just never left.

KW: What do you like about Kingston?

MA: I like that there’s always something to do, there’s a lot going on — for adults, not so much for kids. But I like the community, I like that we get to know the business owners, you walk around town and see people that you know. I feel like it’s a really community-oriented place to live.

KW: What would you change about Kingston?

MA: I’m a mom of two and I’d love to see more opportunities for kids. I’d also love to see something done about the housing issue because everyone is struggling with that at this point. And more ways to support lower-income families, especially in housing.

KW: How do you think Kingston will be different in 10 years?

MA: That’s a really good question, I’m not sure. The hope of course is that there’s more opportunity and things continue to grow. Hopefully it’s still a sustainable place for people to live long-term.
