A Starbucks location along Ulster Avenue has become the latest of the coffee franchise giant’s locations to unionize. In a statement issued Monday a spokesman for the labor organization Workers United said that on Jan. 23, employees at the Starbucks located on Massa Drive in the Town of Ulster had voted 12-4 to form a collective bargaining unit of Starbucks Workers United.

“I think the decision [to unionize] came from a frustration that we were practically pleading for help from higher-ups and were being told ‘this is how it is’ and to ‘suck it up,’” said barista Kian McComb in a statement announcing the vote. “This is while many of us are struggling to make ends meet while our CEO is comfy in private jets.”

The Town of Ulster location will join 140 Starbucks locations — including one at the company’s corporate headquarters in Seattle — that have voted to join Starbucks Workers United since February of last year. Currently the union represents some 11,000 baristas and shift supervisors coast to coast. In a demonstration of its newfound muscle, 5,000 union workers closed down more than 300 locations on Christmas Eve to protest what members said were unfair labor practices by the corporation, which employs 211,000 workers at about 17,000 locations in the U.S.

The union recently filed more than 90 unfair labor practices complaints against the company after, organizers say, officials backtracked on an agreement to negotiate a framework for collective bargaining agreements, develop a process for organizing new collective bargaining units and provide unionized locations with credit card tipping and other benefits.

Starbucks Workers United was formed in 2009 as an affiliate of the Service Industry Employees Union. It represents about 86,000 workers employed in the food service, apparel, textiles, laundry hospitality and other service and manufacturing sectors.
