Right off Exit 114 is Wurtsboro’s quaint Sullivan Street, and the heart of this village is now home to the Bashakill Bazaar, a vintage store owned by Rebecca Falcon, the Ellenville-based entrepreneur and co-owner of Slutsky Lumber and Liberty Street Liquors in Newburgh.

Bashakill Bazaar is at 138 Sullivan St., the location of an old law office turned commercial space owned by an investor that Falcon works with. Falcon wanted to keep the integrity of the building. “I advocated for the building because I just loved the structure of it,” Falcon said. “There is beautiful wood paneling downstairs and upstairs, and it would be such a shame to not make the most of it.”

The building had been empty and unoccupied for the past 30 years, according to Falcon. Besides owning several businesses, Falcon and her husband, Jon, manage real estate for investors in Long Island and Manhattan.

An avid thrifter and vintage lover herself, Falcon spent a lot of time finding the best vintage spots upstate and met several of the vendors now selling their products at the Bazaar. The business focuses primarily on selling vintage items, though there are also some fine art pieces for sale. Vendors are local, she said, with some from Wurtsboro, Kerhonkson, Kingston and more.

The process from idea to opening day was only a few months. “I had the idea on Jan. 10 and we soft-opened at end of April,” Falcon said. “I think because Slutsky Lumber and Liberty Street Liquor needed to get up and running so quickly I’m used to working that way. There wasn’t a deadline but I knew I’d need to be prepared for the spring and summer season because they are the most profitable time for vendors.”

Although the Bazaar is home to mostly vintage, there will also be homeware, nostalgic items, furniture, clothing and art. There are over 20 vendors currently set up for business in the space, including: Shop Ennui, The Artful Dodger, Squirrels Attic, Cursed Objects, Canape Vintage, Rust Records, Miss Kerhampton, Soup Weather Vintage, Nana & Tata Vintage, So Mid Century, Sweet Cheeks Vintage, Good Goods, The Hawks Nest Shop, Morticias Vintage Closet, Brother's Variety Vintage, Tootsies Toys & Trains, Reclaimed Curio, Jen Rydell Art & Design and Voyagers Den.

The first vendor who started selling at the Bazaar was Sara of Brother’s Variety Vintage, who rents three rooms in the downstairs section of the shop. Since she was the first vendor, Falcon made an agreement with her that she would receive commission from the vendors and will work as the shop’s full-time shopkeeper and cashier.

The Bazaar had its grand opening celebration on May 11, which featured local businesses such as Waffle Shack, a pop-up Belgian Waffle maker, Canape Vintage, who did tarot card readings, and Catskill Cocktail Club for some refreshing beverages for patrons.

Coming up, Falcon is hoping to start a monthly store party on Thursdays, which she calls a “sip and shop,” in the hopes that it will bring more foot traffic into the store on weekdays. They will also be participating in the Wurtsboro Street Fair this July.

Long-term, Falcon hopes to continue hospitality projects like the Bashakill Bazaar and do what she can to support the communities she loves. “Our job is to do projects, and we enjoy doing it. We love that it will help community succeed. I’ve been fortunate to have met bunch of locals who have welcomed me here, someone from Crystal Connection (next-door neighbor in Wurtsboro) has a booth in our shop.”

Falcon also hinted to another project in the works: a coworking space in Ellenville called Slutsky Studios, which she described as “A mom-and-pop version of a WeWork.” More to come on this soon.
