Destiny Campbell, 30, is front-of-house at Tilda’s Kitchen, a nonprofit eatery and community space on Broadway. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Kingston Wire: How did you or your family come to Kingston?

Destiny Campbell: I was born in the Bronx, New York. I came to Kingston in 2017. I came up because my mother was going through some medical health issues and my father has family up here, so we moved up here for more support.

KW: What do you like about Kingston?

DC: I love the artwork. I’m a very artsy girl, I went to school for theater arts, so I love that Kington is a town that appreciates art and all different forms of art. I love that pretty much anywhere that you go you’ll see somebody smiling or someone says hello. It’s not so fast-paced as New York City. It’s more laid back and there’s more sense of community here. And there’s spaces such as here, Tilda’s Kitchen, that tend to the community. We make sure that there’s always some type of free food — we accept everyone and anyone. And that was something that I needed when I moved up to Kingston as someone who’s not from here, someone who’s struggling, whose mother is going through different things. Being in Kingston, I felt a sense of community.

KW: What would you like to change about Kingston?

DC: I would like for there to be a little more entertainment for the youth. There’s places like Tilda’s Kitchen and the Center for Creative Education — those are really nice places, unfortunately they don’t tend to do things that are late-night. There’s a lot of youth who unfortunately don’t come from great homes so they find to be outside more fun and I’d like there to be a more safe space for children and anyone to have someplace to be that’s not on the streets, that’s not getting into trouble. Also, transportation — a lot of the issues that I’ve come across that people in my community have told me and especially the youth is that there’s a not a way to get back and forth in Kingston. There’s a lot of historic places out here but unfortunately not everybody has the access to get to them. We do have [a transit system] and that’s nice but I feel like once that improves, it will completely transform this town. It’s like what can I do that’s fun on a Friday night and you have to drive to the next town. If you don’t have access to a car, there’s no transportation and you’re stuck being home bored.

KW: How do you think Kingston will be different in 10 years?

DC: I feel like we’re going be so much more diverse. I think the things I said we could improve on are actually going to happen. Different things I have concerns about are in the works and hopefully we can get them passed and get the funding for them. I think we’re going to get a whole bunch more tourism and we’re going to see a lot of different things come from the youth. The high school will be better because kids will have a way to actually get to school. There will be so much more entertainment and places to go.
