SCHOOL BOARD MEETING OF APR. 16

Public Hearing: A brief hearing was held regarding the use of the Capitol Repair Reserve to address the deterioration of the stream bank near the softball field.

Administrative Reports: Reports were given by Adam Larson, high school principal; Chris Hubert, elementary principal; David Eggleton, director of physical education. Lauren Marrero, director of special services, was not present at the meeting.

Superintendent’s Update: An appropriation budget of $20,252,120 for the school year 2024-25 will be placed before voters on May 21. The polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the new gym. The budget proposal calls for a spending increase of $886,774, or 4.58 percent over the current year’s budget. Most of the increase is attributed to increases in contractual obligations such as salaries, benefits, transportation and BOCES costs. Superintendent John Evans said that Gov. Kathy Hochul has indicated that a proposed cut in Foundation Aid would not impact this year’s final NY state budget. To balance the district’s proposed budget, a levy of $9,771,185, an increase of 2.7 percent which would be within the state cap, is suggested.

The district is also proposing a $100,000 capital outlay to redesign and enhance the outdated Family Consumer Science classroom. The district should receive $68,800 back in the form of state building aid.

Two seats on the board will be up for election. Jason Gorr and Frank Adamse will not be returning. Persons interested in running for the Board of Education should contact Clerk Marilyn Peters at 845-439-4400, ext. 1201.

Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association: During the OCIAA meeting, held on the day of the board meeting, the request by the Roscoe and Manor school boards to allow a more permanent and all-inclusive sports merger was voted down. The boards feel the districts should still be able to come up with a new shared sports identity.

Action Items: The following items were voted and unanimously passed.

Minutes of the previous meeting, treasurer’s reports, revenue status and budget appropriation reports.
Warrant, CSE, CPSE and Section 504 recommendations.
Accept a donation of $1,000 from the University of Michigan.
