The New York Comedy Club, whose alumni includes stars such as Kevin Hart, Pete Davidson and Sarah Silverman, hopes to extend its presence in Ellenville this year after staging two sold-out shows this month at Shadowland.

Buoyed by its initial success, and supported by the Borscht Belt Museum, the club is planning a third show, also at Shadowland, on May 11.

“We see Ellenville as part of the Borscht Belt history,” Emilio Savone, a co-owner of the enterprise, said in an interview. “And stand-up comedy, which is our thing, really got going with Borscht Belt hotels.”

It was in the Borscht Belt of the 1950s that comedians established national reputations, including Don Rickles, Lenny Bruce, Milton Berle, Buddy Hackett and Sid Caesar. Others rose around them like Phyllis Diller and Rodney Dangerfield, and some, such as Woody Allen and Jerry Seinfeld, became superstars. Seinfeld co-creator Larry David has enjoyed a decade of success with his own television show, “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

For present-day-Ellenville, Savone says, “We’re about the community and bringing the community into things. What we have here is a talent agency, a marketing company and a ticketing business. We bring all that to bear on every location we have.”

Savone isn’t yet sure who will be on the bill for the May 11 show, or even whether it will be a “headline” or “showcase” show. The former features a single comedian with a few younger performers to warm up the crowd, while a showcase brings a group of performers who each get the same amount of time.

Further shows depend on how well a local audience takes to what will be on that stage. Savone would like to establish Ellenville as a year-round venue.

Savone and a partner took over New York Comedy Club in 2019, two decades after it was established, and it has locations in the East Village as well as its original location, in midtown New York, and a third branch in Stamford, Connecticut, where Savone grew up.

“Things have just been fantastic in Stamford,” where the club is finishing a successful first year, Savone said. “And now we’re looking to start our fourth location on the Upper West Side.”

Savone is also looking for local talent. “If we can draw in some young people in Ellenville who want to try stand-up comedy, we will be really happy,” he said.
