The Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative will get $30 million in funding to provide supportive housing for individuals suffering from mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence and other needs.

The new initiative was announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul Monday. The goal is to provide permanent supportive housing for people in need to help reduce homelessness and improve their quality of life.

The supportive housing program provides rental assistance and other services to help people with disabilities, mental illness and substance abuse live independently. Research has shown that supportive housing can help keep vulnerable people out of shelters, prisons and emergency rooms.

“Supportive housing plays a critical role in our efforts to strengthen New York’s mental health care system and ensure all New Yorkers can live successfully within their community,” Hochul said. “The Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative provides the funding needed to provide the services vulnerable populations can rely on to live safely in independent settings.”

The program is funded by the state and administered by the Office of Mental Health. The eighth round of funding has resulted in 122 awards for a total of $30 million. These awards are expected to provide services and operating expenses for up to 4,839 supportive housing units.

The funding may be used for rental assistance and services to help individuals and families live independently. The money can be used to pay for rental subsidies and other services, such as employment and vocational training, primary and behavioral health services, and educational assistance.
