What can I say about “Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door” that hasn’t been said thousands of times before? Well, not much, except that it has a new remake, the seventh of the Paper Mario series.

The predicament this time is a destroyed ancient town with lore of treasure sealed behind its gigantic door. Hundreds of years later, a town full of thieves, pirates and mafia bosses named Rogueport is built on its ruins, and after hundreds of years more, who stops by? None other than Princess Peach, reprising her role as damsel in distress.

The princess finds a merchant advertising an ancient map – how mysterious! Sending it to the Super Mario Brothers with the promise of a treasure hunt inspires Mario to set sail for Rogueport, but not Luigi. We will get back to him.

Once there, Mario finds much awry. He saves Goombella from Lord Crump and his gang of X-Nauts and discovers Princess Peach has gone missing – surprise! The two are led to the sewers underneath Rogueport where, surprise again, the Thousand-Year Door is located. Here we are introduced to the main objective: “To find the treasure of yore, take the seven Crystal Stars to the Thousand-Year Door.”

Along with a fun story with twists and turns, “TTYD” has incredible gameplay. Unlike some other Paper Mario games (ahem, Sticker Star) the combat system is great! Along with basic attack and item usage actions, you have a tactics menu, which allows you to run away from, defend, appeal or swap partners. “Partners?” you might be asking. Yes, partners! Unlike another Paper Mario game (Sticker Star!), this one allows for several companions that assist the journey. Take Goombella, for example. As Mario’s partner, she enables players to see enemy stats. You can choose to swap companions at any point for different benefits. Star Points are won in battle, allowing you to increase the damage you can take or give, and to increase how many badges you can equip for special enhancements.

So what else is improved? In the sewers, fast travel is improved with access to every area in the game. There are also secret bosses, with optional challenges of increased difficulty, so, uh, good luck!

But what about Luigi? Shortly after Mario leaves on his adventure, Luigi is asked to rescue Princess Eclair of the Waffle Kingdom from the evil Chestnut King. As you play the game, more of Luigi’s story is revealed, so make sure to find him.

“Paper Mario TTYD” is a timeless classic that is widely considered one of the best, if not the best Mario RPG to date. If you have a Nintendo Switch, please give this game a shot. You won’t be disappointed. Well, it’s better than Sticker Star at least. Ten-and-a-half stars out of ten (can I do that?).
